SAN CLEMENTE
Eleven Capistrano Unified School District teachers shadowed several Southern California Edison employees recently at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to see what it takes to work in the hot seat.
“By educating teachers on what our employment needs are, we are creating a win-win situation,” said Patricia Stark-Horne, educational outreach coordinator for Edison. “The teachers pass on to their students the skills necessary to get a job at San Onofre, and we get a better employee.”
The daylong event started at the plant’s Learning Center, which educates the public about nuclear power through lectures, slides, videos and hands-on demonstrations. Later there was a panel discussion between teachers and plant managers, who make the hiring decisions. The plant employs a variety of workers, including engineers, mechanics, accountants, biologists and firefighters.
