Guenther Cleared to Return for Crespi
Gregg Guenther, a 6-foot-7 junior center at Crespi High, has been cleared to begin working out after spending two months on the sideline because of a broken foot.
Crespi coaches hope Guenther can play Jan. 11 in a Mission League game against Alemany.
WATER POLO
Stephanie Hammer of Valley College has been selected most valuable player and Wonmeen Jun has been picked coach of the year in the Western State Conference.
Hammer, teammate Melissa Minkey and Kelly Gunderson of Ventura were selected All-American.
Chad Caldwell of Ventura High and Greg Snyder of Santa Barbara were named co-most valuable players in the Channel League.
Caldwell, a senior, led the Cougars (26-2) to the Southern Section Division IV title game.
Selected to the all-league team juniors Mike Derse and Brett Phillips of Ventura and senior Patrick Treanor of Buena.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Kim Garnic of La Canada High, 1997 Southern Section Division III champion, committed to Cornell.
Garnic helped La Canada to consecutive state Division III titles by finishing eighth in the 1997 state meet and 10th this year. She placed fourth in the 1996 state Division IV final.
FUND-RAISER
The second annual Lady Rangers’ Basketball golf tournament is scheduled for a noon shotgun start Jan. 10 at Ojai Valley Inn and Spa.
Proceeds from the two-man scramble, will benefit the Nordhoff High girls’ basketball team.
