UC Irvine Is No Problem for Pepperdine
Less than 48 hours after a five-game loss to top-ranked UCLA, Pepperdine rebounded with a 15-8, 15-9, 15-6, victory over UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Saturday at Pepperdine.
Chris Jacobson tied a career-high with 16 kills for the No. 3-ranked Waves (4-1, 3-1 in conference play).
George Roumain had 21 kills and eight blocks for Pepperdine.
BYU d. CS Northridge, 15-10, 15-12, 15-6--Former Highland High middle blocker Ryan Millar had 19 kills for No. 2-ranked BYU (2-0, 2-0) in an MPSF match at BYU.
Chad Strickland had 22 kills for Northridge (2-3, 0-2).
BASEBALL
CS Northridge 3, Cal Baptist 2--Adrian Mendoza had two runs batted in for host Northridge (4-4) in a nonconference game called after five innings because of rain.
Canyons 5, Long Beach 4--Craig Hennes slugged a three-run home run for Canyons in a Harbor tournament pool-play game at Long Beach City College.
Cory Briggs’ bases-loaded walk in the eighth proved to be the winning run for Canyons (2-0).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Desert 88, Antelope Valley 87--John Burrell scored 33 points for Antelope Valley (16-9, 2-1) in a Foothill Conference North Division game at Desert.
Moorpark 85, Cuesta 82--Sparky Larkin’s three-point basket at the buzzerlifted the Raiders (11-10, 3-1) in a Western State Conference North Division game at Cuesta (18-11, 2-1).
Glendale 73, Valley 71--Tony Hoggatts sank two free throws with five seconds remaining and the Vaqueros (12-12, 2-2) upset the Monarchs (19-6, 3-1) in a WSC South Division game at Valley.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Pepperdine 58, St. Mary’s 51--Samatha Rigley scored 19 points for Pepperdine (16-7, 6-2) in a West Coast Conference game at St. Mary’s.
Canyons 114, West L.A. 42--Gohar Tumanian scored 23 points for Canyons (19-7, 5-0) in a WSC South Division game at West L.A.
Valley 52, Glendale 51--Meresaini Malaki scored the game-winner with 10 seconds left to play in a WSC South Division game at Valley.
Tanya McLaughlin scored 23 points for Valley (16-9, 4-1).
TRACK AND FIELD
Northern Arizona Quadrangular Meet--The Northridge men’s and women’s teams swept the four-way competition at Flagstaff, Ariz., and six Matadors posted provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA indoor championships.
Joe Criner and Clinte Motley were double winners in the men’s competition, and Erica Bowling won the women’s 200 meters and 400 meters .
