The original lyrics to “Candle in the Wind 1997,” the ballad Elton John sang at Princess Diana’s funeral, sold for $400,000 Wednesday night at a charity auction that benefited Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles.
Three pages of handwritten lyrics and a printed final version autographed by songwriter Bernie Taupin and John were sold to the Lund Foundation, a nonprofit group that funds programs for disadvantaged children.
John’s recording of the song has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, with the proceeds going to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
