El Modena Takes the Fifth in Century League Finals
El Modena had four championships and qualified 12 of its wrestlers for the Southern Section finals as the Vanguards won their fifth consecutive Century League title Thursday night at Foothill High.
The Vanguards finished the meet with 192 points. Santa Ana Valley was second with 150.5 and Villa Park took third (133).
Canyon’s Ryan Robertson upset Mario Mendoza of Orange, who is ranked second in the county, at 147 pounds, to win the individual championship.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado crowns four champions--Four El Dorado wrestlers went home with titles, including Matt McRae, who came back to defeat Katella’s Toriano Johnson, 11-10, in the 173-pound final. In the Freeway League:
Troy wins--Troy won its fourth league title with 176.5 points after five of its wrestlers won individual championships. Brandon Stock clinched the league title with a pin at 191 pounds.
In the Golden West League:
Santa Ana wins--It was an easy victory for the Saints, who won their sixth consecutive league title. Santa Ana finished with 167 points, more than 80 ahead of second-place Saddleback. Tustin (76) was third.
In the Orange League:
Dye wins fourth consecutive title--Tim Dye of Anaheim won his fourth straight league title after pinning his opponent late in the third period in the 173-pound division. Dye was one of seven champions for the Colonists.
In the Sunset League:
Fountain Valley wins--Bryan Masumoto, ranked second in the 121-pound division, won the league title, pinning his opponent in 3:13, and help Fountain Valley to the league title with 235 points.
