Troxler Leads Marmonte Charge Into Semifinals
Heavyweight Chad Troxler of Simi Valley was among six Marmonte League wrestlers to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II wrestling finals Friday at Westlake High.
Troxler, 43-6, a three-time Marmonte League champion, recorded pins against Kerry Monnie of Valley View and Nathan Neemia of Katella, then advanced by injury default to today’s semifinals.
Steve Jauregui of Thousand Oaks (215 pounds), Dylan Hull of Agoura (189), Josh Berman of Camarillo (152), Larry Schneider of Thousand Oaks (145) and Craig Baldwin of Camarillo (140) also reached the semifinals.
Baldwin upset top-seeded Jarred Dutton of Newport Harbor with a second-round pin after defeating Steve Sanchez of La Serna in the first round.
Schneider, seeded second at 145, pinned Matt O’Donnell of Santa Monica and Mario Mofia of San Bernardino.
Jauregui, unseeded, pinned Greg Jones of El Toro in the first round, then defeated sixth-seeded Rudy Vasquez of El Rancho, 8-4, in the second round.
Hull, a two-time league champion, defeated Steve Corral of El Rancho, 15-0, then pinned Bryan Brengman of Hemet in the second round.
Berman recorded victories over Nick Vanderpool of Apple Valley and Andrew Wilhelm of Peninsula. Berman pinned Wilhelm in 3:30.
Olivia Ocampo of Channel Islands, who this season became the first girl in the state to win a varsity league title, was defeated in the second round by Matt Brown of North Torrance, 18-3. Ocampo recorded a first-round pin against Binh Nguyen of Cajon in 4:29.
