Natural resources in Ventura County will have a new advocate when Kathleen Van Velsor joins the Environmental Defense Center next month.

The public-interest law firm hired Van Velsor as an environmental analyst to replace veteran county activist Carla Bard, officials announced Monday. Bard died in a rainy-day car accident in November.

Chosen from many candidates seeking to work at the Santa Barbara-based law firm’s Ventura office, Van Velsor has 25 years of experience in coastal resource management, water quality, urban planning, public policy and law.

“Kathleen will be a dogged investigator,” said John Buse, an EDC attorney. “She was chosen for her breadth of experience and her leadership abilities.”

A Santa Cruz resident who is relocating to Ventura County, Van Velsor has worked with many Bay Area and Central Coast environmental groups, such as the San Francisco Ecology Center, Coastal Advocates and the San Francisco League of Conservation Voters.
