Eglee Mietzner; Longtime Ventura Resident
Longtime Ventura resident Eglee De Jesus Ramos Mietzner died after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 61.
Born Dec. 28, 1936, in Valencia, Venezuela, Mietzner studied library science at the University of Naples in Italy. When she returned to Venezuela, she became a library director at the Ateneo of Valencia, a cultural center.
Later she became head librarian at the University of Carabobo. During that time she became involved in helping poor children in the barrios of Venezuela.
Her beauty and her volunteer work won her the title of “Miss Carabobo,” her family said. She was a runner-up in the Miss Venezuela contest in 1962.
Two years later, Mietzner met her husband, Edmond M. Mietzner, a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer. The two moved to Ventura, where she began working in the construction industry.
In 1992, Mietzner learned that she had ovarian cancer and was told she had six months to live, but she battled the disease and lived another six years, her family said.
She is survived by her husband, their son, Edmond E. Mietzner, his wife, Sara, and two grandchildren, David and Lauren, all of Ventura. She is also survived by her sister, Jennie Padilla of Ventura, and her brothers, Salvador Ramos Guigni and Rafael Ramos Guigni, both of Venezuela.
A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Joseph Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
