Deputy Given 1-Year Term for Thefts at Homes
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Industry station was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail for stealing cash and guns from homes where he helped serve search warrants, according to the district attorney’s office.
Ruben P. Ramirez, 44, of Riverside agreed to repay $3,000 in restitution to victims and to serve 500 hours of community service, according to district attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.
As part of the sentence by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Reid, Ramirez will not be allowed to carry a firearm during a five-year probationary period, Gibbons said. That would prevent him from working in law enforcement.
The crimes occurred between January and December 1995. Ramirez resigned from the Sheriff’s Department this year.
