8 More Employees Laid Off in Effort to Stem Financial Crisis
The financially strapped city government has laid off eight more people, reducing its staff from last year’s all-time high of 105 to 30. The layoffs reduce the budget by $23,000 a month.
The square-mile city has been through tough economic times recently. Last year, it disbanded its police force, whose duties were taken over by the Sheriff’s Department.
For more than a year, the city received a $200,000 monthly subsidy from a private foundation controlled by developer Irving Moskowitz, who owns the local bingo parlor and card club.
When the subsidy stopped last summer, the city started reducing its staff and planning to disband its police force.
