Chaminade Overcomes Underdog Notre Dame

For 88 minutes, Notre Dame High gave defending Southern Section Division III girls’ soccer champion Chaminade all it could handle in a divisional quarterfinal Friday at Chaminade.

But with two overtime goals, Chaminade pulled out a 3-1 victory and defeated their Mission League rivals for the third time this season.

Chaminade will play South Pasadena in a semifinal Tuesday.

Freshman forward Kim Taylor scored in the 88th minute and gave the Eagles the victory when she knocked in a 20-yard direct kick off the hand of goalkeeper Cheryl Acosta.

Chaminade Coach Mike Evans said the play was Taylor’s first free kick of the season and that he chose her after spying an opening at the far post.

“I saw we had a chance to chip it in there and I knew Kim would have the touch and awareness to put it there,” Evans said.

Chaminade dominated play in the first half and led, 1-0, at halftime after Acosta could not handle Carlie Stokes’ cross in the 12th minute and Amy Watts scored from one yard.

Notre Dame seized the momentum in the 51st minute when Lacey Nickerson scored from five yards after a goal-mouth scramble following Melissa Rubey’s corner kick.

But overtime was all Chaminade, as the Eagles outshot Notre Dame, 6-1 in the 20-minute extra period.

Stokes scored on a cross from Michelle French with eight minutes to play.

Simi Valley 2, Peninsula 0--Alexandria Ingraham scored two minutes after halftime to break a scoreless tie and the unseeded Pioneers upset the second-seeded Panthers in a Division I quarterfinal game at Peninsula.

Mindy Gondrez scored the second goal for Simi Valley (25-1), which meets third-seeded Mission Viejo in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Garfield 3, Monroe 2--Claudia Contreras and Haydee Lopez scored in the second half but the Vikings (15-4) lost in a shootout, 4-3, in a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal at Monroe.

Kennedy 5, Poly 0--Brigitte Macias scored three goals in the first half for the Golden Cougars (15-6-1) in a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal at Kennedy.

Poly finished 10-4-1.

Mater Dei 2, Buena 1--Alison Fennel scored the tying goal for the Monarchs with six minutes to play in regulation and scored again with three minutes left in overtime, eliminating the Bulldogs (19-4-4) in a Division II quarterfinal at Mater Dei.

BOYS

Loyola 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Trevor Mutch scored in the 22nd minute of a Division I quarterfinal for the third-seeded Cubs (26-3).

Thousand Oaks finished 16-4-5.

In other Southern Section quarterfinals:

San Luis Obispo 3, Notre Dame 0--The Tigers (19-3-1), top-seeded in Division IV, overwhelmed the Knights (12-8-3) at Notre Dame.

St. Bonaventure 2, Bishop Diego 1--Alex Doran took a pass from Tim Coultas and scored the tiebreaking goal from 10 yards midway through the second half at Bishop Diego and the Seraphs (9-5-9) advanced to a Division V semifinal against Chadwick.

Jake Waltrip scored St. Bonaventure’s first goal early in the second half.

The Seraphs were Tri-Valley runners-up to Bishop Diego and were 0-1-2 against the Cardinals during the regular season.

Reseda 3, San Pedro 2--Carlos Morales dribbled past three defenders before beating the goalkeeper in the 118th minute to move the eighth-seeded Regents past the Pirates in a City Section quarterfinal at Reseda.

Reseda (15-2-3) will play El Camino Real in a semifinal Tuesday.

The Regents trailed, 2-1, with a minute to play before Oscar Sims scored on an assist from Fred Schiffer to send the game into overtime.

Reseda’s Edwin Miranda scored with a minute left in the first half to produce a 1-1 tie.

El Camino Real 4, Banning 3--Sean Miller headed in Kellen McLaughlin’s free kick four minutes into overtime to give the Conquistadores (17-5-2) their second consecutive victory in extra time in a City Section quarterfinal at El Camino Real.

Jose Rivera-Otero scored his 24th goal in the second half to give the fourth-seeded Conquistadores (17-5-2) a 3-2 lead and assisted on an earlier goal by Jimmy Choto.

Fifth-seeded Banning (13-3-1) forced the overtime by scoring with 10 minutes remaining in regulation play.
