Black Appointed Coach at L.A. Baptist
Tom Black, who played volleyball at Crespi High, has been selected girls’ volleyball coach at L.A. Baptist High.
Black, an assistant at Royal for the last two seasons, takes over for Sue Newcomb, who retired after winning 15 league titles in 17 years at L.A. Baptist.
“She’s obviously been a great coach with a lot of success and hopefully we can continue that,” said Black, who was an All-Southern Section selection as an outside hitter in 1991 at Crespi and played at UC San Diego.

Earning his stripes: Kicker Jay Kirchoff of the minor-league Simi Valley Swarm has signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to Swarm Coach Aaron Spaulding, Kirchoff was directly responsible for two of the Pacific Football League club’s 10 victories last season.
“My agent sent film from some of the Swarm games and the Bengals requested a private tryout with me, then they flew me out to Cincinnati for another look,” Kirchoff told Swarm officials.
