Harvard-Westlake Runs Out of Gas
After dominating the third quarter, Harvard-Westlake High couldn’t maintain the pace in the last eight minutes of a quarterfinal game in the Best of the West girls’ basketball tournament on Wednesday at Ayala High.
Lynwood held the Wolverines to six points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 52-42 victory.
Omelogo Udeze had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (11-3), and L’Tanya Robnett contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.
Lacomia Hatcher scored 18 points for Lynwood (7-4).
Contra Costa 54, Cornerstone Christian 51--Julia Tamai scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles, but Cornerstone Christian (3-5) fell in the third-place game of the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.
Alizabeth Johnston added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Karri Becker had nine points, five steals and four blocked shots for Cornerstone Christian, which made just two of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Melissa Mentink scored 37 points, including 17 in the third quarter, for Contra Costa (10-2).
Providence 60, Faith Baptist 27--Patty Aguirre scored 16 points for the Pioneers (7-1) in the fifth-place game of the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.
Rachel Greer scored 15 points for the Contenders (6-2).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Grace Brethren 64, Providence 57--Ryan Shaffer scored 13 points and Robert Shaffer had 12 for the Lancers to help secure fifth place in the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.
David Azer scored 19 points for the Pioneers (5-3).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Chaminade 3, Anaheim Canyon 0--Mindy Wyatt, Amy Watts and Carlie Stokes had goals and the Eagles won the consolation final of the Foothill tournament at Foothill High.
Wyatt, who was inserted into the lineup six games ago after center midfielder Lia Cummins suffered a broken ankle, scored her seventh goal in the seventh minute on a rebound after a corner kick by Watts.
Stokes’ sixth goal came on a header after she took a centering pass from Kim Taylor in the 20th minute, gave Chaminade (13-1-1) a 2-0 halftime lead.
Chaminade closed out the scoring four minutes before halftime on a goal by Watts.
Chaminade goalkeepers Kim Nelli and Katie Thomas each stopped one shot to post the Eagles’ 12th shutout.
Chaminade 2, Dana Hills 0--Mindy Wyatt scored her sixth goal and Carlie Stokes her fifth for the Eagles in a Foothill tournament consolation game.
