He’s Looking for Value in Awards
I thought MVP stood for most valuable player. It used to be awarded to the player that most helped his team to be successful. However, nowadays the MVP seems to be awarded to the player with the best individual year. Brett Favre for MVP in football makes sense. He, more than anyone in the league, helped his team to be successful. Barry Sanders had an outstanding individual year, but a 9-7 record is not a great team accomplishment.
Larry Walker had a great individual year, but a third-place finish by the Colorado Rockies was not a great team accomplishment. They probably could have done as well without him.
The Cy Young Award in baseball is given to the pitcher with the best year. The Babe Ruth Award should be given to the best hitter in baseball.
In the same manner, recognize outstanding individual accomplishments in all the sports by giving them individual awards. Save the MVP for the player that most helped his team to reach the pinnacle of success. As it was intended to be.
