Oxnard Puts Ventura Away in Third Quarter
The Oxnard High boys’ basketball team went on a third-quarter run and held on to defeat Ventura, 67-52, in a Channel League opener Friday night at Oxnard.
Ventura (3-9) trailed, 31-24, at halftime, then rallied to tie the score at 35-35 midway through the third quarter. But the Yellowjackets went on a 14-0 run and led, 52-37, by the end of the third quarter.
In other boys’ games:
San Marcos 68, Hueneme 56--Matt Ramirez scored 18 points and Robbie Collins had 13 for host Hueneme (4-6, 0-1 in league play) in a Channel League opener.
Sonny Oden scored 15 to help San Marcos (10-2, 1-0) to the victory.
Dos Pueblos 64, Buena 48--Ryan Fay had 10 points, and Armando Conaway had six points and eight rebounds for Buena (3-11) in a Channel League opener at Dos Pueblos.
Crescenta Valley 63, St. Francis 55--Derek Dawson made three consecutive three-point baskets in the fourth quarter to extend a two-point lead for Crescenta Valley in a nonleague game at St. Francis.
Hart 69, Littlerock 44--J.T. Stotts scored 18 of his 22 points for Hart (9-6) in the first half of a nonleague game at Littlerock (4-8).
GIRLS
Morningside 54, Harvard-Westlake 45--The Wolverines (11-4) went cold in the second half, making six of 29 shots and wasting an 11-point halftime lead in a fifth-place semifinal at the Best of the West tournament at Ayala High. L’Tanya Robnett had 17 points for Harvard-Westlake, which had just one field goal in the fourth quarter.
MEN
The Master’s 88, Southeast Oklahoma 74--Chad Bell had 20 points, leading a group of five Mustangs to score in double figures, and The Master’s (12-5) won in the first round of the Incarnate Word Crusaders tournament in San Antonio, Texas.
