Jet Lands Safely After Odor of Smoke Reported
A Continental Airlines jetliner made a safe and uneventful landing at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday despite concerns that there might be a fire in the cockpit.
Airline officials said fire equipment was deployed along the runway after the pilot of Flight 219--a Boeing 757 carrying 130 passengers and a crew of six from Houston to Los Angeles--notified air traffic controllers that he smelled smoke in the cockpit.
There was no fire. The officials said the plane was taken out of service for an inspection to determine the source of the odor.
