Passport Advice
You recommended that travelers lock their passport in the hotel safe (“Who Pays the Bills for Items Lost Behind Locked Doors?” Travel Insider, May 10). But they should first check local laws. Some countries require visitors to have their passports in their possession at all times.
Police in Japan can, and do, arrest you if you cannot produce your passport on demand. Violators must languish in a jail cell until they can arrange for someone to bring their passport to the police station.
