Police Probe Possible Racial Killing of Man
JASPER, Texas — A black man walking to his apartment was tied to a car and dragged to his death along a rural east Texas road in what police said Monday could be a racial killing.
Authorities continued to search for evidence near the heavily wooded area where the body of James Byrd Jr., 49, was found Sunday morning.
Jasper County Sheriff Billy Rowles said three white men were in custody on unrelated charges but could be linked to the killing.
Rowles said the three men had been drinking together early Sunday morning. Jasper is about 100 miles northeast of Houston.
