10 Students From Projects Awarded Scholarships
The Housing Authority awarded university scholarships Friday to 10 high school seniors from the Pico-Aliso projects in East Los Angeles.
The six young men and four young women were selected for scholastic achievement and personal character as demonstrated through academic transcripts, letters of recommendation from teachers and community leaders and an original essay on their personal hero.
The Pico-Aliso housing development suffers from crime problems fostered by the presence of at least seven gangs, said program coordinator Adrienne Merced.
Each recipient was awarded $1,000 for tuition and books.
The scholarships are part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Urban Revitalization Demonstration program, which provides funds to youths interested in pursuing higher education who are either educationally or economically challenged.
