Esmero Wins Tennis Title at Sectionals
Melissa Esmero of Huntington Beach defeated Amber Liu of La Mesa, 6-2, 7-5, to win the girls’ 16s title Sunday at the Southern California Junior Sectionals at Los Caballeros Sports Club in Fountain Valley.
Chase Exon of Irvine defeated Derek Miller of San Diego, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, in the boys’ 18s third-place match.
Kady Pooler of Laguna Niguel beat Tracy Lin of Anaheim, 6-2, 6-4, in the girls’ 12s third-place match. In a girls’ 14s, Ashley Maddocks of Laguna Beach beat Lori Stern of Ojai, 6-2, 6-3, to finish third.
In the boys’ 18 doubles final, Jaime Sahara of San Luis Obispo and Miller beat Tom Lloyd of Yorba Linda and Carl McCafferty of Highland Park, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Rick Thorne of Huntington Beach was ninth in the bicycle stunt vert event at the X Games in San Diego, with a score of 84.50.

The Mission Viejo-based West Coast Shamrocks beat the Colorado Rush, 2-1, in the championship game of the under-19 girls’ division at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Stephanie Rigamat, a member of the UC Irvine women’s soccer team, scored both goals for the Shamrocks.
San Dieguito beat the Southern California Blues, 2-1, in the under-15 girls’ division. The Blues are based in San Juan Capistrano.
