Elway Is Returning for Honor

John Elway, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, will return to the San Fernando Valley on June 5 to help celebrate the renaming of the Granada Hills High football stadium in his honor.

Elway, a 1979 graduate of Granada Hills, played on two City Section 4-A Division championship baseball teams for the Highlanders and passed for more than 5,000 yards in his three-year football career.

Darryl Stroh, 58, who coached Elway in high school and recently came out of retirement as co-football coach, spearheaded the drive to honor Elway.

“It’s not just the fact he won the Super Bowl,” Stroh said. “Through his career, he’s exhibited the character of being a great role model for young people.”

The school will hold an assembly on June 5 to honor Elway and unveil a new $10,000 football scoreboard paid for, in part, by donations from Elway’s former Granada Hills teammates.

Elway has returned on occasion over the years to play in the Granada Hills alumni baseball game.

The football stadium is currently named after former Granada Hills principal Bryce Schurr. The school is expected to name its athletic complex after Schurr.
