BOYS’ SOCCER DIVISION IV
No. 1 San Luis Obispo (20-2-1) vs. No. 2 Laguna Beach (19-6-2)
NOON TODAY CERRITOS GAHR HIGH
Laguna Beach had never won a section title until Andy Thomas came to town. But now in his second year, Thomas has a chance to lead the Artists to back-to-back titles. Thomas lost leading scorer and Division IV player of the year, Chris Whitworth, to graduation. But Thomas has found enough scoring by moving three forwards into the offense and concentrating on defense. Forward Spencer Herbert (16 goals, five assists) keys the offense and goalkeeper Mike Labeda, fullback Shaun MacGillvray and sweeper Noah De La Cruz lead the defense. “You’re only as good as your players,” Thomas said. “The kids have been receptive.”
