Hancock, Hamill to Compete In O.C. Speedway Event

World speedway champion Greg Hancock of Costa Mesa and runner-up Billy Hamill of Monrovia will be among the riders competing for the Coors Light Spring Classic title tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

It might be their only local appearance this year; they will return to England to compete in the European Gran Prix Series.

They will be joined by Apple Valley’s Mike Faria, last year’s U.S. National and American Speedway Final champion.

Also on the 32-race card will be sidecars.

Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for seniors and juniors 13-17, and $2 for kids 6-12. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., racing begins at 7:30.

The fairground’s speedway season opener is April 18.

Lynn Taylor, who coached Laguna Hills to the 1996-97 state Division II girls’ basketball title, has resigned, Athletic Director John Stonebarger said Friday.

Taylor’s resignation might not be permanent. He told Stonebarger he wanted to take a year off, then return to coaching in some capacity.

The Hawks went 31-3 during their championship season, but had only one starter return, Erin Larsen; they went 7-15 and missed the playoffs.

Taylor, The Times Orange County 1995-96 coach of the year, was 96-57 in seven seasons.

Concordia named Walter Eisner and Thomas Busby as men’s soccer coaches, Athletic Director Curt Cattau announced Friday. Eisner and Busby replaced Tim Odle, who resigned in January.

Eisner played professionally for 15 years in Chile, Peru and the United States and Busby played semipro soccer in Long Beach in the late 1960s. Eisner most recently coached the boys’ team at Mission Viejo High in 1993-94.
