Babin’s Home Run Difference for Saugus
Justin Babin’s two-run home run with no outs in the eighth inning gave Saugus a 7-5 victory over Alemany in a Westside tournament game Saturday at Saugus.
Matt Lane was three for three, scoring once and driving in two for the Centurions (1-0). Lane’s two-out, two-strike single in the seventh tied the score, 5-5.
In other Westside tournament games:
Camarillo 15, Hawthorne 0--Joe Yingling was five for five with three runs batted in and gave up three hits in six innings pitching for Camarillo (2-0) at Hawthorne.
Canyon 5, Channel Islands 1--Garrett Behnke had two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning, and Dustin Funk (1-0) allowed a only a fifth-inning single in 6 2/3 innings while striking out five and walking two for host Canyon (1-1).
Moorpark 10, Beverly Hills 9--Wes Rasmussen scored on a sacrifice fly by Brendon Weak in the eighth inning to give the Musketeers (1-0) the victory.
Hart 13, San Pedro 0--Jamie Shields (1-0) pitched a two-hitter,, striking out five, while J.T. Stotts and Jeff Gaeta each had three hits and drove in two runs for the Indians (2-0) in a game at San Pedro.
Westchester 8, Taft 4--Jeff Spector, Mitch Spector and Mike Fonvergne each had two hits for Taft (1-1) in a game at Taft.
Sylmar 6, Buena 5--Edson Gonzales’ fielder’s choice in the sixth inning brought in Jesus Martel from third base with the game-winning run.
Hueneme 6, Palisades 5--A seventh-inning throwing error on Robert Avila’s two-out grounder allowed Mario Amaro and Francisco Camarena to score for host Hueneme (1-1), which was trailing, 5-4, at the time.
Notre Dame 12, Venice 2--Chris Morell had four hits and one RBI for Notre Dame (2-0) in a game at Venice.
In the San Fernando Valley tournament:
Chaminade 10, Calabasas 0--Ryan Soroka drove in four runs with two hits, including a three-run home run, and scored twice for host Chaminade (1-0).
Highland 12, Harvard-Westlake 2--Jason Kubel had four hits, including a home run and a double, drove in two runs and scored three for host Highland (2-0).
Thousand Oaks 4, Antelope Valley 0--Matt Rogers pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking one for Thousand Oaks (2-0) in a game at Antelope Valley.
Palmdale 10, Westlake 9--Mark Hendricks had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs, and Manny Yanas added two doubles and two RBIs for the Falcons (1-0) in a first-round game.
Quartz Hill 11, Santa Paula 0--Brady Robbins pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and hit a two-run home run in the second inning to break a scoreless tie for Quartz Hill (2-0).
In the El Segundo tournament:
Crespi 12, Gahr 5--Andy Campanella had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs, and the Celts (2-0) benefited from nine walks and two hit batters to advance to the quarterfinals at Gahr.
Agoura 15, Royal 8--Nick Hillman hit two home runs, drove in five runs and scored three, and Brian Jacobsen added a home run and four RBIs for Agoura (2-0) in a second-round game at Agoura.
In non-tournament games:
Santa Clara 8, Bishop Diego 7--Danny Chaparro scored from third base on Ryan Baker’s sacrifice fly for host Santa Clara, which had blown an early 5-0 lead in a nonleague opener.
SOFTBALL
Hart 4, Glendale 0--Becky Bowen’s pinch-hit run scoring single and Casey Pickard’s two-run single were the highlights of Hart’s three-run rally in the seventh inning of a second-round Hart tournament game at Newhall Park.

Hart 7, Sylmar 2--Amanda Fortune had two hits and drove in a run for Hart in a first-round game at Newhall Park.
Highland 12, Hoover 1--Michelle Wintermute pitched a three-hit shutout in a five-inning game for Highland (2-0) in a second-round game at Saugus High.
Hoover 7, Antelope Valley 0--Cori Herbert and Haley Henning combined on a no-hitter for Hoover (1-0) in a first-round game at Saugus High.
Highland 6, Valencia 4--Robin Hauptman’s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Highland (1-0) a first-round victory at Saugus High.
Westlake 3, El Camino Real 2--Sarah Koppel’s two-run home run in the third inning proved to be the margin of victory for the Warriors (2-0) in a quarterfinal game at Hart.
Westlake 4, Harvard-Westlake 0--Erin Voeltz (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out 11 for Westlake (1-0) in a first-round game at Hart.
In the Simi Valley tournament:
Alemany 1, Calabasas 0--Natalie Isabel hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Annette Ramirez for Alemany (2-0) in a first-round game at Rancho Simi Community Park.
Kim Deiner (2-0) pitched a four-hitter for Alemany and also had nine strikeouts.
Righetti 1, Agoura 0--Jocelyn Forrest pitched a no-hitter for Righetti, striking out 14 and walking one, and she scored from third on a passed ball by Lauren Casper in a second-round game.
Rio Mesa 7, Kennedy 1--Briana Mathiesen’s single scored Tawnya Barraza in the sixth inning for Kennedy (1-1) in a second-round game at Rancho Simi Community Park.
Notre Dame 7, Calabasas 1--Patricia Wetzel (1-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out six for Notre Dame (1-2) in a consolation bracket game at Rancho Simi Community Park.
In the Downey tournament:
Crescenta Valley 10, Verdugo Hills 0--Freshman Meredith Cervanka (1-0) pitched a six-inning no-hitter, striking out 11, and doubled and homered for the Falcons (2-0) in a second-round game that was called because of the 10-run rule.
