Poly Ineligible for Playoffs Next Season

City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said Saturday that the Poly High boys’ soccer team is ineligible for postseason competition next season after being removed from the playoffs Tuesday for using an ineligible player.

Fiege said section rules state that any team found to have used an ineligible player in the postseason is automatically banned from the next season’s playoffs. Fiege said the rule was enacted shortly after Belmont was stripped of the 1994 City boys’ title for using an ineligible player.

The third-seeded Parrots, who had advanced to the semifinals, forfeited 10 victories and two ties after Poly administrators discovered an overage player on their roster. The team’s final official record was 3-13-1 overall and 3-10-1 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play.

Fiege said the school can appeal before the start of next season.

There is bad news on several fronts for opponents of next season’s Reseda boys’ team, which won the City title Saturday night, 3-2, over Bell.

The Regents had only four seniors on this season’s team. Reseda will have exhausted the eligibility of goalkeeper Jimmy Ordaz, and defenders Hector Romero and Sergio Euceda, all starters.

Not only do the team’s two leading scorers--junior forwards Oscar Sims and Rocky Monzon return--but Sims’ younger brother William is expected to enroll at the school.

Sims, who finished with 21 goals after scoring twice in the final 20 minutes Saturday, is the son of Oscar Sims Sr., a former member of the Guatamalan national team and a professional player in that country.

“We’re going to come back with mostly the same team,” Sims Jr. said. “And we want to be back [in the title game] in a year.”

Also returning for the Regents will be playmaking midfielder Carlos Morales, who had eight goals, and sophomore sweeper Edwin Miranda, who was brilliant both on defense and with free kicks in the title game.

Members of the Chatsworth girls’ team, which won the 4-A Division title Saturday with a 3-1 victory over San Pedro, will have keepsakes of their third consecutive championship.

After each title, Chancellor Coach Jack Sidwell presents his players with jewelry in a soccer motif.

Two years ago, the players received gold charm necklaces and last year received pendants in the shape of their uniform numbers.
