It’s Time for League Business

Here’s a look at how teams shape up heading into the high school baseball league races:

City Section

NORTHWEST VALLEY CONFERENCE

It’s still early, but Chatsworth High has lived up to preseason hype. The Chancellors outscored their five opponents in the Westside tournament, 49-14, and have the best hitting and pitching depth in the City Section. Outfielders Tom Morefield (.455 batting average, seven home runs) and Bryan Gant (.429), and third baseman Danny Eisenberg (.400) are among Chatsworth’s quality hitters. Ismael Marin (10-1, 2.86 earned-run average) was the player of the year in the West Valley League. . . . Defending City champion El Camino Real started 1-4 in the San Fernando Valley Invitational, but the Conquistadores had early season struggles in past years and still recovered. First baseman Woody Cliffords batted .480 last year and second baseman Jared Maiden .361. . . . Kennedy, which won the North Valley League the past three years, has quality pitchers Jack Cassel, Wes Crown and Tim Arroyo, but need to find offense. The Golden Cougars were shut out by Thousand Oaks on Saturday. . . . With 15 juniors on its roster, Granada Hills is a year away from serious contention but has hitting potential. Infielders Peter Gunny and Jon Bringuier each had four home runs last year. . . . Cleveland (Justin Savitt) and Taft (Mitch, Jeff and Jason Spector) have offensive options but need pitching.
