FOOTHILL LEAGUE
Hart is 5-0 and appears to be the league favorite. Sophomore Jamie Shields has pitched two complete games. Andy Davidson was 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA last season. All-Southern Section right fielder Chris Wright (.516, four home runs, 32 RBIs ) is back to lead the potent offense along with infielder J.T. Stotts, who already has two home runs. . . . Valencia has eight starters returning from a team that finished fourth, including All-Section catcher Brady Burrill (.487, five home runs, 32 RBIs) and Marty Mears, who has three home runs this season. Chris Honaker, a second-team all-league pitcher, also returns. . . . Defending league champion Burroughs has the league’s top returning pitcher in Tony Sandoval (6-2, 1.59 ERA) and all-league shortstop Tommy Perez (.467, seven home runs, 33 RBIs), but the Indians are not as deep as they were last year. . . . Canyon could be the surprise of the league. Mike Munn is solid on the mound (1.31 ERA, 11 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings this season) and at the plate (.400). Ben Metcalf (.600) and Ted Atler (.462) are also off to good starts. . . . Saugus has only two returning starters from last year’s third-place team: pitcher-outfielder Justin Babin and shortstop Ryan Sage. . . . Burbank has a new coach, Javier Burruel, but it may take a while to turn the Bulldogs around.
