Moos, Edison Defeat Newport Harbor in Track
John Moos won three events as host Edison defeated Newport Harbor, 72-64, in a nonleague boys’ track and field meet Thursday.
Moos won the 100 (11.4 seconds), 200 (23.5), and 400 (53.2) meters for the Chargers.
Newport Harbor’s Curt Herberts won the 800 in 2:05.6. Herberts also won the 1,600 with a time of 4:48.2. Teammate Chuck Loo was the big winner for Newport Harbor.
Loo won the 110 hurdles (15.6), 300 hurdles (41.3), high jump (5-10) and triple jump (40-4 3/4) for the Sailors (0-2).
In other nonleague boys’ track and field:
El Toro 110, San Clemente 26--Senior Danny Lee of El Toro (1-1) won the two-mile race in 9:56.4 in his first meet back after an ankle injury.
Tustin 92, Irvine 42--Dante Maxie went a personal-best 22-0 to win the long jump for Tustin. Maxie also finished first in the 300 hurdles (41.0) for the Tillers.
In nonleague girls’ track and field:
Edison 80, Newport Harbor 56--Carrie Foss won the 3,200 for Newport Harbor in 12:06.0. Foss also won the 1,600 (5:43.7) for the Sailors (0-2).
El Toro 73, San Clemente 54--Kelley Kruger won four events (100 hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump) for San Clemente. Emily Gleason set a school record for El Toro in the discuss with a 131-1 mark. She held the previous mark of 128-11.
In nonleague badminton:
Garden Grove 18, Kennedy 1--Tam Nguyen defeated Lih Chen, 15-0, 15-0, and Shin Young Mur, 15-2, 15-0, in singles. Garden Grove is 5-0.
In nonleague baseball:
No. 2 La Quinta 9, City of Industry Workman 2--Willie Keller had a home run and a single, two runs scored and three RBIs for La Quinta (8-0). Jason Garcia pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits.
Los Amigos 13, San Clemente 3 (6, mercy)--Jose Rodriguez and Adam Shaeffer each were two for three with three RBIs for Los Amigos (4-3), which scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. San Clemente is 2-4.
In nonleague golf:
No. 2 University 388, No. 8 Mission Viejo 409--Medalist Brian Sinay shot a one-over-par 73, to lead University (3-2) at Dove Canyon and Rancho San Joaquin.
Aliso Niguel 411, San Clemente 411--Aliso Niguel broke a school record by shooting 196 at El Niguel. The previous record, 202, was set in 1996. Aliso Niguel’s Matt Schreiber finished at Pacific Country Club and El Niguel with a four-over-par 76. Aliso Niguel is 5-1.
Brea Olinda 377, Hacienda Heights Los Altos 422--Brea Olinda’s Jon Magana had three birdies at Imperial to finish with a one-over-par 72 in a two-day event at Imperial and Hacienda Country Club. Magana had a 34 at Imperial.
Fountain Valley 378, Canyon 437--Candie Kung was the medalist for Fountain Valley, leading the field with a two-under-par 33 at Anaheim Hills. She went on to shoot a two-over-par 73. Rui Kuroiwa led Canyon (0-6) with an 83.
In the Best of the West softball tournament:
Canyon 6, Alta (Utah) 2--Jennifer Falatico scored the winning run for Canyon in the top of the fifth inning on a double by Lisa Hatter. Falatico also had a two-run single in the second inning for the Comanches (5-3).
In nonleague softball:
No. 9 La Habra 7, Esperanza 2--Cassie Preece had three hits and three stolen bases for La Habra in the absence of two-time All-County first team player Jenny Topping.
Topping, who hasn’t missed a game in over three season, is one of three high school players who are currently in San Diego training with the U.S. National team in preparation for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Topping will miss two games of the Garden Grove tournament Saturday but will return Wednesday when the Highlanders (5-1-1) play third-ranked Mater Dei.
Christina Gibbons pitched a two-hitter for La Habra.
Topping’s replacement, Casey Thompson, made several blocks of pitches in the dirt and did not give up a stolen base.
Estancia 5, La Quinta 3--Heidi Foster had a three-run home run for visiting Estancia (1-3).
Rancho Alamitos 11, Brethren Christian 5--Amanda Santos tripled to drive in two runs as the Warriors used a six-run second inning to defeat visiting Brethren Christian. Pitcher Trisha Heinlen, just recalled from the junior varsity team, picked up the victory in her first varsity start.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
Capistrano Valley 110, Corona del Mar 59--Freshman Amber Stachowski won the 200 (2:01.95) and 100 freestyles (56.45) for Capistrano Valley. Stachowski was also part of the winning 200 medley relay (2:00.10) and 200 freestyle relay (1:46.76).
Laura Kramer won the 200 individual medley (2:20.74) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.17) for Capistrano Valley (3-0).
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
No. 5 Dana Hills 10, No. 3 Woodbridge 8--Scott Jason and Blake Wilson-Hayden defeated Woodbridge’s Jim Hunter and Justin Davenport, 6-4, to clinch 10 set victories and an upset victory for Dana Hills. Woodbridge falls to 6-1.
Brian Kent swept in singles for Dana Hills, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Teammate Javier Carillo also swept for the Dolphins, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.
Tyler Call and Jonathan Sheridan swept in doubles for Woodbridge, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
Capistrano Valley 12, Irvine 6--Sophomore Michael Nguyen improved to 17-1, sweeping, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Capistrano Valley (5-1). Sophomore Chad Widtfeldt (14-4) also swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for the Cougars. Irvine is 3-5.
