Tainted Cake Sickens 1,142 Students

Students across Japan were stricken with food poisoning from tainted layer cake served with school lunches, a national daily reported. A total of 1,142 junior high school students contracted food poisoning from cake tainted with salmonella bacteria served at schools March 12 and 13, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported. The cake was prepared by an Osaka confectionery manufacturer, which was ordered shut pending an investigation. The children suffered symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea, and 39 required hospitalization.
