House Panel OKs Funds for 710 Freeway Project
Widening of the Firestone interchange at the Long Beach Freeway is a little closer to reality. The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure this week authorized $16 million over five years for the project.
The funding, part of a larger transportation bill, now must be approved by Congress.
“These improvements to Firestone Boulevard will address probably the biggest traffic problem we have in South Gate,” Councilman Hector de la Torre said.
The $32-million Firestone project includes widening the bridges crossing the Los Angeles River and Rio Hondo channel and reconstructing the interchange. City and county funds are also being used for construction.
