Saugus Uses Familiar Foe to Record 1-0 Victory

You can go home again. Just in a different uniform.

Former Crescenta Valley High softball player Corrie Atwood scored from second base with no out in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to give Saugus a 1-0 victory over her former school in a nonleague game at Saugus.

Atwood, a junior third baseman, walked to lead off the eighth and went to second on a bunt single by Kelly Cornelison before Julie Watson’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed for a two-base throwing error.

Cornelison was two for three.

Watson, a sophomore, also earned her first high school victory, pitching three innings of no-hit ball in relief of freshman Jennifer McLarty. They combined to allow three singles.

Junior right-hander Melinda Moulden struck out five and allowed five hits for Crescenta Valley (6-2), ranked No. 7 in the region by The Times.

Saugus (6-3), ranked 10th, had runners on second and third with no out in the third before Moulden worked out of the jam.

Crescenta Valley’s best opportunity to score came in the fifth, but pinch-runner Laura Schmalen was thrown out at the plate by Saugus first baseman Elizabeth Harkins during a double-rundown.
