Transit Options of the Future to Be Exhibited
An electric car that zips along at a cool 220 mph and satellite-guided bus fleets will be among the futuristic commuter concepts on exhibit Saturday at a free expo hosted by Irvine Valley College.
“FastForward: Transportation Solutions for the Next Generation” is presented by the Orange County Transportation Authority and offers a glimpse of the way Southern Californians may get around in decades to come, according to OCTA spokesman John Standiford.
The event includes a children’s crafts exhibit, games, entertainment and prizes.
Exhibits include the “Lightning Rod,” billed as the fastest electric car in the world for its ability to race more than 220 mph and runs on a few cents worth of electricity. Displays will explain the intricacies of “intelligent” transportation systems that use computers and satellites to ferry passengers more efficiently.
The expo is part of a larger campaign by OCTA to explain and explore transportation alternatives to residents of a region expected to continue sharp growth into the next millennium.
The expo is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Irvine Valley College, on the corner of Irvine Center Drive and Jeffrey Road in Irvine.
For more information call OCTA at (714) 560-5718 or view its Web page at https://www.octa.net for details and bus routes to the event.
