Secretary of State Leads Drive to Recruit Voters
As part of the first California Voter Registration Week, California Secretary of State Bill Jones visited the Third Street Promenade Thursday to recruit new voters.
“If you don’t vote, you shouldn’t complain if you don’t like the way things are,” said Jones, his suited entourage conspicuous among the throngs of tourists wearing shorts.
Jones is visiting six California cities this week in an attempt to raise the number of registered voters from the current level of 15 million, he said.
As part of that effort, his office is collaborating with the Spanish-language media to reach the Latino population and sending birthday cards to all California residents on their 18th birthday to congratulate them on their voter eligibility. Since 1996, the card program garnered 3,000 new voters, he said.
