Teen Denied Loan Shoots 4, Kills Self
CARMEL, Ind. — A man apparently upset that his loan application had been denied opened fire on four KeyBank employees Thursday, killing Penny Schmidt, 32, and injuring three of her co-workers, one critically.
The man, identified by police as Antione Whitehead, 19, left with an undisclosed amount of cash. But “it almost appeared the money was an afterthought,” said Hamilton County prosecutor Sonia Leerkamp.
Whitehead, crouched in a treetop, fatally shot himself later as police closed in. It took more than two hours to free his body from a tangle of branches using a cherry picker.
The shooting was followed less than an hour later by a People’s Bank holdup several miles away in Indianapolis. A suspect in that robbery was critically injured when police shot him.
