Carter Follows Jamison in Declaring for the NBA

Swingman Vince Carter, the North Carolina junior who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in shooting last season, said Thursday he will join classmate and national player of the year Antawn Jamison in making himself eligible for the June 24 draft.

Jamison made his decision public Monday.

“The team had a great time and we’re all very close and we played well together on the floor but sometimes you have to be selfish and say, ‘What’s good for Vince?”’ said Carter, a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 15.6 points and was named a second-team All-American.

Scott Hoch shot a six-under-par 66 to gain a share of the lead with newcomer Franklin Langham after the opening round of the Houston Open at The Woodlands, Texas.

Pat Hurst made eight birdies, all from inside 10 feet, and finished with a seven-under 65 at Daytona Beach, Fla., for a share of the lead with Dawn Coe-Jones after the first round of the LPGA Titleholders Championship.

A urine sample submitted by Irish Olympic champion swimmer Michelle Smith contained deadly levels of alcohol, the head of the International Olympic Committee medical commission said in Sydney, Australia.

“The alcohol level was so high that you could not survive with that concentration,” said Prince Alexandre de Merode, chairman of the medical commission. “That is strange--that normally indicates manipulation.”
