Irvine Golfers Set Record in Victory Over Woodbridge
Irvine shot the lowest score in school history when it defeated Woodbridge, 172-195, in a Sea View League golf match Thursday at Oak Creek.
James Johnston was medalist for the Vaqueros with a three-under 33. Three other golfers shot 34 for Irvine.
The previous low score was a 184 earlier this season at Oak Creek.
In another Sea View League match:
No 3. Santa Margarita 185, El Toro 191--Matt Clark of El Toro (12-5, 6-4) and Jimmy Dunn of Santa Margarita (12-4, 9-1) each shot one-under 35 to lead the field at Coto de Caza.
In the Century League:
Villa Park 203, El Modena 225--Medalist Mark Hewlett shot par 36 and Brandon Hymes shot 39 for Villa Park (13-3, 8-0) at Green River.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 201, Katella 211--Ken Gallagher shot a three-over-par 38 for El Dorado (13-5, 5-3) at Western Hills.
In the Olympic League:
Whittier Christian 202, Calvary Chapel 221--Mike Lord shot a three-over 38 for Whittier Christian (6-11, 6-7) at La Mirada.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 196, Magnolia 223--Medalist Dalen DeMary shot a two-under 33 at Dad Miller and Brian Birkinshaw shot a 37 to lead Valencia (12-5, 6-2). Magnolia is 1-15, 0-8.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 1 University 187, Estancia 208--Brian Sinay shot a one-under 35 at Rancho San Joaquin as University (15-2, 9-0) clinched the league title. Ron Won shot 36 for University.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 412, Trabuco Hills 421--Dana Hills’ Gary Brandmeier was medalist with a four-over 76 at El Niguel. The Dolphins (11-7, 7-3) finished tied for second in league.
In the Sunset League:
No. 5 Fountain Valley 401, Edison 413--Eric Hird led Fountain Valley (14-2, 8-0) with a five-over 77 at SeaCliff. Kyle Wicks shot 78 for Edison (6-10, 0-8).
No. 8 Huntington Beach 387, Esperanza 407--Medalist Ryan Gale shot a par 72 for Huntington Beach (14-2, 7-1) at Yorba Linda Country Club. Brian Six led Esperanza (6-10, 2-8) with a 77.
In Freeway League boys’ track and field:
Sunny Hills 87, Fullerton 40--Gary Funk won the 110 hurdles (16.3), 300 hurdles (45.6) and the high jump (5-6) for Sunny Hills (5-0 in league). Fullerton’s Aaron Easton took first in the 100 (10.2), long jump (18-9) and triple jump (38-11).
Troy 68, La Habra 50--Troy finished second in league. Tony Cuen won the 1,600 (4:48.0) and 3,200 (10:27) to lead fourth-place finisher La Habra.
In Freeway League girls’ track and field:
Troy 111, La Habra 16 (in yards)--Larissa Green won the high jump (5-0), long jump (13-9 1/2) and triple jump (32-0) as Troy finished second in league. La Habra ended the season in fifth.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 124, Bolsa Grande 3--Wendy Slaughter won the 100 with a time of 12.1 as Pacifica won its third consecutive league title. Slaughter also won the 220 for the Mariners (6-0) with a time of 30.4.
In the Orange League:
Savanna 65, Magnolia 61--The meet came down to the final race with Magnolia leading 61-60, Savanna won the 1,600 relay for the victory and second place in league. Savanna (4-1) won the event in 3:40.0, Magnolia’s time was 3:43.3. Magnolia (3-2) finishes third in league.
In Century League boys’ volleyball:
Foothill 3, Canyon 0--Steve Rodriguez had 30 kills and Chris Cachet had 50 assists to lead Foothill (9-3, 8-0) past Canyon, 18-16, 15-13, 15-8. Canyon is 4-9, 3-5.
Orange 3, El Modena 0--Mike Garcia had 20 kills for Orange (9-7, 5-3), which won, 15-8, 16-14, 15-12.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 2 Laguna Beach 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Noel Puffer had 10 kills in a 15-10, 15-7, 15-5 victory for Laguna Beach (11-1, 7-0).
