IBM to Offer Free Windows 98 Upgrade

IBM Corp. said it will offer coupons to let buyers of some Aptiva and Thinkpad computers upgrade to Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 98 software for free, amid concern that a possible delay in the new operating system could slow PC sales. Windows 98 is an upgrade of Microsoft’s Windows 95, which runs most of the world’s personal computers. IBM had already been offering discount coupons for upgrades for $19.95 to consumers who buy PCs before Windows 98 hits stores next month. The expected retail price of Windows 98 is $109. Windows 98 is expected in stores June 25, but a possible Justice Department antitrust suit against Microsoft could delay the release. That, in turn, could hurt sales if consumers put off buying until the new version arrives.
