NEW MEXICO SOFTBALL

* County connections: Lainie Horne of Mater Dei, Joy Hannifin of Kennedy, Kathy Moore of Garden Grove, Rachael Wennekamp of El Toro, Carmen LoNigro of El Dorado and Krissy Keene of Westminster

* Worth noting: Horne, a sophomore outfielder from Seal Beach who batted .284, broke the university’s single-season record with 35 runs batted in. Hannifin, a senior catcher from Cypress, batted .248 with 22 RBIs, both career highs. Wennekamp, a second baseman from Lake Forest, batted a team-high .347 with a .449 slugging average. Moore, a freshman pitcher/first baseman, batted .314 with 29 RBIs and team-high six home runs in a team-high 62 games. Moore was 10-12 with 2.82 earned-run average. The Lobos finished 23-40, 8-24 in the WAC.

LONG BEACH STATE BASEBALL

* County connections: Curt Lee of Mater Dei and Fullerton College; Chris Toomey of Dana Hills, Scott Redfox of Canyon, Jeff Leuenberger of Canyon, Mike Hota of Marina, Paul Day of Capistrano Valley and Saddleback College

* Worth noting: Junior outfielder Paul Day has started all 54 games and leads the team with a .438 batting average and a team-high 77 RBIs. Junior second baseman Curt Lee has started 49 games and is batting .302 with 21 RBIs. Leuenberger, a freshman pitcher, is 5-2 with a 4.98 earned-run average. Hota, a junior utility infielder, batted .417 and had seven RBIs in 13 Big West games.

* Appearing locally: The 49ers (33-20-1, 19-9-1) open the Big West tournament 7 p.m. Thursday at Blair Field against Sacramento State.
