Older Actresses

Re “Waking Up Old in Hollywood,” Oct. 23: As a member of Actresses @ Work, I must take issue with Al Martinez’s rambling and rather mean-spirited column. We do not pretend that the issue of ageism as it applies to actresses is on par with finding the cure for cancer. However we, like any other folks in the work force, would like to find ways to continue to support our families and selves in our chosen profession.

How we are perceived is a metaphor for women in America, and we are tackling this issue for them as well as us. It’s interesting that a gentleman living in Los Angeles who describes himself as writing for movies and television for 20 years would have so little understanding of the actress’ life, and not recognize us as fellow artists who have the right to practice their art into old age.

As for the “message” in our current production, “Magpie’s Tea Room” . . . well, it’s just a little comedy we’re putting on.
