Iraq Opposition
Re “Military Questions Plan to Topple Hussein,” Oct. 22: I was appalled to read that Congress has a plan to authorize up to $97 million to arm opposition groups within Iraq and that Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott has suggested that American forces might support the effort with air cover.
How many more times must the U.S. provide arms, etc. to groups in places where we want to topple the government? We have done this many times--to name two, Afghanistan and Nicaragua. Where will it end? This type of aid is of no help to the U.S. or the country involved. Are the arms manufacturers lobbying Congress so much that they needed a payoff?
