ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BOYS
Alec Moss
SCHOOL: Notre Dame
YEAR: Junior
SPORT: Football
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Moss, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive end, has been a catalyst for the Knights, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times. Against Alemany on Oct. 2, he forced two fourth-quarter fumbles to help preserve a 14-13 victory. “He’s been a big player in all of our games,” Coach Kevin Rooney said.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Moss played a big role in Notre Dame’s 17-14 victory over previously unbeaten Loyola. He blocked a field-goal attempt, stuffed a reverse on fourth-and-goal and made two critical plays in the fourth quarter--forcing a fumble that led to a Notre Dame field goal and sacking quarterback Chris Peterson on third down to force a punt.
GIRLS
Jaclyn Pedersen
SCHOOL: Royal
YEAR: Sophomore
SPORT: Cross-country
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Pedersen, a Times’ All-Region selection as a freshman, has won nine of 10 races, including the Seaside, Ojai and Atascadero invitationals and the Ventura County and Marmonte League championships.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Pedersen won the Marmonte League title by holding off Agoura sophomore Laura Jakosky in the three-mile race. The victory came six days after Pedersen beat Jakosky for the Ventura County championship and made up for the 1997 league final when Kelley Hess of Thousand Oaks upset Pedersen.
