Trojans Looking Good, but Bibby Looking for Standouts

As far as starting lineups go, the Trojans are in pretty much the same situation as UCLA. Coach Henry Bibby said he’s happy with the caliber of play in practice so far, but is still searching for five players who stand above the rest.

“One day there is no better player on the floor than [Elias] Ayuso,” Bibby said. “The next day, [Ayuso] is not there, but you have Jeff Trepagnier who steps up.”

With Kevin Augustine still suspended for Saturday night’s exhibition game, and possibly for the season opener against San Diego State on Tuesday, freshman Brandon Granville has assumed responsibility for the point guard position.

Brian Scalabrine, a junior college transfer, has looked impressive at center. Jarvis Turner is a solid bet to start at forward, but the junior offers no clues as to who will join him.

“I think we’re deep,” Turner said. “I think we’re going to play a lot of guys.”

Said Bibby: “I’m going to play it by ear. I don’t necessarily believe in a certain lineup.”

The Trojans finished their exhibition schedule with a 101-54 victory over the City Sports All-Stars at the Lyon Center.

USC was led by junior college transfer Quincy Wilder, who had 15 points and five rebounds, and freshman Sam Clancy, who had 14 points and eight rebounds.
