Man Killed When Truck Jumps Curb After Crash
VAN NUYS — A 24-year-old Panorama City man was killed after being struck by a truck that had been pushed onto the sidewalk during a collision, police said Sunday.
Hector Calderon was walking along the east side of the 7300 block of Van Nuys Boulevard about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when he was hit by a Toyota pickup traveling north, said Los Angeles Police Officer Leona Thomas of the Valley Traffic Division.
The pickup had been forced onto the sidewalk after being broadsided by a southbound Toyota minivan that was attempting to make a left turn into a driveway, Thomas said.
The police report said the minivan’s driver, Carmen Morales, 28, of Van Nuys, was making an illegal left turn when her minivan struck the pickup, driven by Lakewood resident Kevin Scheid, 39. No charges will be filed against the motorists, Thomas said.
“There was no drugs or alcohol or any intention on their part,” she said. “It was just a tragic accident.”
