Backup Hextall No. 1 for Flyers

Ron Hextall is no longer Philadelphia’s top goaltender, but the veteran was still able to grab a piece of Flyer history Friday night.

Hextall became Philadelphia’s all-time victory leader, making 19 saves to help the Flyers to a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at Greensboro, N.C.

Hextall, now the backup to John Vanbiesbrouck, passed Hall of Famer Bernie Parent with his 233rd victory as the Flyers won their third in a row.

“I’ve said this a million times, but it means I’ve been around a long time and have been fortunate enough to be with a great organization who has had a real good hockey team,” Hextall said.

Parent set the previous mark in 486 games in the 1960s and ‘70s, while Hextall has played in 15 fewer games.

Phoenix 2, San Jose 1--Dallas Drake scored 37 seconds into overtime to lift the Coyotes to a win at San Jose and extend their unbeaten streak to an NHL-leading 10 games.

The Coyotes also set an NHL post-expansion record by holding an opponent to two goals or less for the 13th consecutive game.

Dallas 4, N.Y. Islanders 2--Rookie defenseman Sergey Gusev had his first NHL goal and assist to lead the Stars at Dallas.

Gusev, called up from the International Hockey League earlier this week to replace injured right wing Jere Lehtinen, was playing his first NHL game of the season and 10th of his career.

“I wanted to play great tonight,” Gusev said. “The first thing for me is to play strong defense. The goal and the assist are a plus.”

Joe Nieuwendyk, Pat Verbeek and Daryl Sydor also had goals for the Stars, who extended their winning streak to three games and beat the Islanders for the fifth consecutive time.

Buffalo 4, Toronto 1--Dominik Hasek made 32 saves and Curtis Brown, Michal Grosek, Matthew Barnaby and Dixon Ward each scored for the Sabres at Buffalo.

The Sabres, who extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3), have an eight-game unbeaten streak against Toronto, including three wins this season.

Ottawa 4, Washington 1--Alexei Yashin had a goal and an assist to help the Senators end a six-game winless streak with a victory at Washington.

Steve Martins, Bruce Gardiner and Andreas Dackell also scored for Ottawa, which received 33 saves from goaltender Damian Rhodes.

Peter Bondra scored the only goal for Washington, which had left wing Steve Konowalchuk and defenseman Sergei Gonchar back in the lineup following long injury layoffs.

Washington left wing Richard Zednik was suspended for four games and fined $1,000 by the NHL for high-sticking Toronto Maple leafs defenseman Daniil Markov in a game Wednesday night.
