U.S. Sweeps Past Japan En Route to Sweden

Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara and John Daly maintained their mastery of the Old Course on Friday with a 3-0 sweep of Japan that set up a battle of unbeatens in the Dunhill Cup at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Woods shot a 2-under-par 70 to beat Katsuma Miyamoto by seven strokes, and O’Meara matched that score for a five-shot victory over Hiroyuki Fujita. Daly beat Nobuo Serizawa, 77-80.

The U.S. will next play Sweden, which stayed unbeaten with a sweep of England.

Zimbabwe will meet South Africa for a place in the semifinals even though they were upset by France and Germany, respectively.

Defending champion David Duval shot a four-under 67 to take a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Michelob Championship at Williamsburg, Va.

Duval, who was at 10-under 132, won his first PGA Tour title last year with a 13-under total.

First-round co-leader Phil Tataurangi and Frank Lickliter, who started the day one shot back, were tied for second at 133.

Se Ri Pak shot a three-under 69 and took a two-stroke lead over Helen Alfredsson, Kelly Robbins and defending champion Annika Sorenstam in the LPGA Tournament of Champions in Opelika, Ala.

Pak was at seven-under 137 for two trips around the 6,300-yard Lakes Course at Grand National.

John Morgan of England shot a five-under 67 for the first-round lead of the Transamerica seniors tournament at Napa, Calif.

Morgan used a run of three straight birdies starting at No. 11 at the Silverado Country Club to take a one-shot lead over eight golfers.

Among the eight tied for second was Ray Carrasco, a teaching pro from Irvine.

“It’s nice getting used to the ambience of the cameras,” said Carrasco, who qualified for the PGA Tour in 1974 at Silverado. “This is my first time in the press room in my career.”
