State Schools Chief to Debate Challenger
State Supt. of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin and challenger Gloria Matta Tuchman will face off at Pasadena City College on Oct. 29 in their only Los Angeles area debate.
The nonpartisan race pits the 51-year-old incumbent, who served four terms in the Assembly, against Tuchman, 58, co-chair of campaign for Proposition 227, the anti-bilingual education initiative.
Tuchman, an elementary school teacher, is a former Tustin school board member. Eastin, who has held the post for four years, also was a teacher and school board member.
The debate will be open to the public and will be broadcast live at 1 p.m. on KCRW-FM (89.9). It will be moderated by Warren Olney and is part of the voter education program of the California Education Empowerment Project, said Rene Amy, project director and debate organizer.
