White Sox Have a Bash in a 17-16 Victory

Ray Durham and Craig Wilson hit consecutive homers to start the 12th inning as the Chicago White Sox took a wild 17-16 victory over the Tigers on Monday night at Detroit.

Albert Belle had five RBIs and a career-high five hits, including three doubles. He topped 1,000 RBIs in his 10-year career.

Wilson, playing only his sixth game, drove in five runs with four hits, including two homers.

The Tigers used 10 pitchers and the White Sox used eight to tie the record for most pitchers in an extra-inning game.

New York 3, Boston 0--Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout and the Yankees gave the Red Sox and their fans more to worry about with a victory at New York.

The Red Sox, who appeared to be a lock for the AL wild card only a few weeks ago, lost for the ninth time in 11 games, but remained three games ahead of Toronto in the wild-card race as the Blue Jays lost at Cleveland.

Cleveland 6, Toronto 3--Dwight Gooden won his fifth consecutive start as the Indians defeated the Blue Jays at Cleveland.

Cleveland, seeking its fourth consecutive AL Central title, reduced its magic number to three with the victory. Toronto remained three games behind Boston in the wild-card race.

Seattle 10, Minnesota 3--Mac Suzuki got his first major league victory and Russ Davis hit a three-run homer at Minneapolis as the Mariners handed the Twins their fifth loss in a row.

Ken Griffey Jr., who leads the AL with 51 homers, went 0 for 5.

Kansas City 16, Oakland 6--Mike Sweeney and Jeff King hit three-run homers to lead the Royals at Kansas City, Mo.
