Mats Wilander and Karel Novacek both lost their matches by injury default at the Battle of the Beaches tennis tournament at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach. Wilander (foot) and Novacek (knee) both lost their first matches Wednesday.
Jeff Tarango defeated Danie Visser, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, and Michael Joyce defeated James Blake, 7-5, 6-1, Thursday. Play continues tonight with the semifinals Saturday and the final Sunday.
