Red Wings Release Klima
Former King Petr Klima has been cut by the Detroit Red Wings, who offered him a chance to continue his comeback attempt with Adirondack of the AHL. The Red Wings said they did not know whether he would accept the offer. Klima started his career with the Red Wings in 1985 and has also played for Edmonton, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. He has 312 goals in 12 seasons. . . . Defenseman Darryl Sydor has signed a four-year contract with the Dallas Stars to end his holdout.

The Florida Panthers played their first game at National Car Rental Arena in Sunrise, their new $192 million home in Sunrise, Fla. The first goal scored in the new arena was by the Panthers’ Dwayne Hay, who took Peter Worrell’s behind-the-net pass at the goal mouth and sent it past Boston goaltender Byron Dafoe at 6:16 of the first period of a 2-1 exhibition victory. . . . The defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings got their first win of the exhibition season as defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom scored twice and assisted on another goal to key a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Detroit. The Red Wings are now 1-3-1, while the Rangers dropped to 2-2-1. . . . Mark Recchi scored 26 seconds into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 5-4 overtime victory over the Blackhawks at Chicago. . . . Bill Guerin and Pat Falloon each scored two goals as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Ottawa Senators, 5-3, at Edmonton.
