Endorsement for 10th District
It’s no surprise that The Times did not endorse my reelection (editorial, March 28), since the newspaper has never supported me in any of the four campaigns in which the people sent me to the state Senate and L.A. City Council. The Times is part of the establishment and, while entitled to its opinion, is clearly not comfortable with my independent style and grass-roots approach to public service. But what really disappointed me was the implication that only my opponents have any ideas and know what’s best for Los Angeles and the 10th District, which I’ve represented since 1987.
This will be my last council campaign due to term limits, but I’m not asking my constituents to vote for me just because of what I’ve done in the past, including implementing a unique “zero tolerance” graffiti zone in the city, resurfacing 85% of the roadways and potholes in my district and creating critical senior housing facilities. I need these final four years to complete the many projects which I hope will benefit the 10th District and the city long after I’m gone, projects like transforming an old Pico Boulevard fire station into a youth and family center, refurbishing every library in the district and completing nearly a billion dollars of development that is on the drawing board or being built.
